Desert Driving in Qatar: A Beginner's Guide

Desert driving is close to a national pastime in Qatar, and the inland sea at Khor Al Adaid draws people year-round. It is also genuinely hazardous for the unprepared. Never go alone The most important rule. Travel with at least one other vehicle. A single stuck car in soft sand with no second vehicle to recover it becomes a serious situation quickly, particularly in summer. Deflate your tyres Lowering tyre pressure is the single biggest factor in whether you float over soft sand or dig into it. Deflating spreads the contact patch and dramatically improves flotation. Carry a compressor and reinflate before returning to tarmac. Driving at road speed on sand pressures is dangerous and damages tyres. Essential equipment A recovery rope rated for your vehicle's weight, rated recovery points, a shovel, a tyre deflator and compressor, plenty of water, and a means of communication. A sand flag is required in many dune areas so others can see you over crests. Basic technique Momentum is your friend on sand, but so is smoothness. Sudden steering or throttle inputs dig tyres in. Approach dunes straight on rather than at an angle, and never crest a dune blind — the far side may drop away sharply or hold another vehicle. If you get stuck, stop spinning the wheels immediately. Spinning digs you deeper. Clear sand from around the tyres, lower pressures further if you can, and reverse out along your own tracks where possible. Heat and timing Avoid the middle of the day in summer entirely. Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return, and remember that mobile coverage is patchy away from main routes. Start with a group The sensible way in is with people who know the terrain. Experienced groups run trips regularly and will teach technique far faster and more safely than learning alone.
