Transferring Car Ownership and Plates in Qatar
What both buyer and seller need to complete a transfer, and the mistakes that hold it up.

Ownership transfer in Qatar is straightforward when both parties arrive prepared, and frustrating when they do not. Almost every delay comes down to the same handful of issues. Before you go Clear all outstanding traffic fines on the vehicle. Settle any outstanding finance and obtain the bank's clearance letter. Ensure the vehicle has passed any required technical inspection. The buyer needs valid insurance in their own name, effective from the transfer date. This is the most frequently overlooked requirement. Documents Both parties need their Qatar ID. The seller needs the original registration card. Company-owned vehicles need authorisation from the company along with its commercial registration. At the traffic department The transfer is completed at a traffic department service centre. Both parties normally attend, or provide a properly executed power of attorney. Fees are paid at the counter and a new registration card is issued in the buyer's name. Special plate numbers Distinctive plate numbers are treated as an asset in Qatar and can hold significant value. A seller wishing to keep a special number must arrange to transfer it to another vehicle they own, rather than letting it pass with the car. Agree this explicitly before the sale. Assuming the plate is included when the seller intends to keep it, or the reverse, sours an otherwise clean deal. Practical advice Do not release full payment before the transfer completes, and do not hand over the vehicle before it does. Complete the transfer, then settle. A signed private agreement is not a substitute for the official transfer.
